Product & Technology Leadership

Interim CTO and CPO cover for the moments a product function cannot wait

An interim CTO or CPO steps into the seat and runs it. Not an advisory retainer and not a review with recommendations attached — the roadmap, the delivery cadence and the team are owned outright for the length of the engagement.

That is usually needed when something has changed faster than hiring can keep up: a departure, a funding round, a diligence process, or a product that has outgrown the person who started it.

Where the need is ongoing rather than urgent, the same work runs fractionally — a set number of days a month instead of a full-time seat.

When this is the right call

A gap between permanent hires

The CTO or CPO has left and a search takes months. Delivery cannot pause while it runs, and a holding pattern costs more than the cover does.

Diligence or an exit process

Investors are asking questions about architecture, delivery predictability and compliance that need answering by someone who has been on both sides of that table.

The team has outgrown its process

What worked at five engineers is failing at fifteen. Roadmap, backlog and sprint discipline need rebuilding while shipping continues.

A founder-led product needs a product function

The founder is still the de facto CPO and it is now the bottleneck. The role needs separating from the person before it can be hired for.

Where this has been done

Three concurrent engagements, each a different shape of the same job — which is the point: an interim seat, an agency exec seat, and a product owned end to end.

Common questions

What is the difference between an interim CTO and a fractional CTO?

An interim engagement is temporary and near-full-time — it fills a seat that is empty or about to be, usually for a defined period. A fractional engagement is ongoing and part-time, for organisations that need senior product or technology leadership but cannot justify a full-time hire. The work is the same; the shape and the commercial model differ. Both are available.

What does an interim CTO or CPO actually do?

Owns the roadmap and backlog, runs delivery, builds and scales the team, and takes responsibility for the technical and product decisions that follow. In practice the first weeks are diagnostic — establishing what is actually shipping, what is blocked and where the risk sits — before changing anything structural.

How much does an interim CTO cost?

Day rate is £1,400–£1,600, which sits in the standard UK band for interim CTO and CPO cover. Retained engagements price below that — from £5,800 a month for one day a week, £11,000 for two — because sustained commitment removes the cost of repeatedly re-scoping. Short advisory sessions are £200 an hour. A three-month full-time interim seat and two days a month of fractional cover are different commitments and are priced as such.

How quickly can you start?

Availability is flexible and agreed per engagement, confirmed on a first-come basis once a start date is set. Interim cover is usually needed at short notice, so it is worth asking early even if the timing is not settled.

Do you work remotely?

Remote-first. Face-to-face work across the UK and EU is possible by arrangement — useful for onboarding, team offsites, board sessions and diligence, less necessary for day-to-day delivery.

Is this only for sport organisations?

No. The track record is concentrated in sport technology, but the work — roadmap ownership, delivery, team building, compliance readiness — is not sport-specific. Sport is where it has been proven, not a restriction on where it applies.
